Let’s get Grilling
As the weather warms up, BBQ season kicks off across neighbourhoods. While this is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, it’s important to be mindful of others, especially when it comes to avoiding antisocial behaviour (ASB).
ASB includes actions which cause, or are likely to cause, harassment, alarm, distress or nuisance to others. When BBQing, this can take many forms such as loud music, excessive smoke, late-night parties, or leaving rubbish behind. These behaviours can disrupt the peace and negatively impact your community.
To BBQ respectfully:
- Keep noise down: Enjoy music and conversation but be aware of volume, especially in the evening.
- Manage smoke: Position your BBQ away from neighbours’ windows or washing lines and avoid burning fatty foods that produce heavy smoke.
- Clean up: Dispose of rubbish properly
- Be considerate of timing: Avoid late-night grilling sessions that might disturb others’ rest
- Keep to the rules: Residents are not permitted to store flammable or explosive materials on Ocean property. This includes gas cylinders, fuel and accumulations or wood.
- Be aware of fire and heat risks: In hot weather, the heat from a disposable BBQ can remain at high levels for hours after you have put it out. This can increase the risk of fires when left on the ground so please ensure all disposable BBQs are disposed of correctly. If you’re BBQing at home, make sure you do it away from long grass, dry bushes, fences and sheds.
Stay safe and have fun this summer! A little consideration goes a long way to keeping your BBQs enjoyable for everyone.
